President Joe Biden has traveled to the Virginia coast to promote his plans to increase spending on education and children, part of his $ 1.8 trillion families proposal announced last week
The president said education was the key to the country’s dominance and people needed education beyond high school for the country to be globally competitive.
âWhen America made 12 years of public education in America universal in the early 1900s, it made us the best educated nation in the world,â Biden said. âThe rest of the world has caught up with us. They don’t wait. And 12 years is no longer enough to compete with the 21st century world and lead the 21st century. “
Community college is a matter of personal importance to the Bidens. The first lady is an English professor at Northern Virginia Community College in Alexandria.
âMy students, like all students here, I’m sure, come from all walks of life,â she said. âThey show up, they don’t complain, and all they ask for is one thing in return: the chance to work hard and build a good life for themselves and their families. “
Biden joked that promoting community colleges was crucial to his own marital happiness.
“I have to admit that if I didn’t have these positions I would be sleeping in Lincoln’s room,” the president teased.
There is uncertainty that Biden will get an ambitious set of spending plans thanks to narrow Democratic majorities in Congress. He proposed a total of $ 4.1 trillion to spend on infrastructure, broadband, new school buildings, electric vehicle charging stations, the power grid, child tax credits and child care. children, among other programs.
The Bidens started their journey by visiting a fifth grade class at Yorktown Elementary School.
The president asked the students, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”
âA fashion designer,â replied a student.
“A chef,” said another, to which Biden replied, “Holy pimp, I’ll be cursed!”
âA hairdresser,â said a student. Biden joked, “I could use some, hair, I mean.”
