All of a sudden, the AFC East went from the Patriots and three cream puffs to a highly competitive division – a Bill Belichick team is no longer reigning.

The Bills finally broke through last season and established themselves as a team to be reckoned with in the near future.

The Dolphins are also on the rise under Brian Flores, producing a winning record and nearly qualifying for the playoffs.

The Jets?

Well, there was still a cream puff. They stayed in the basement, but with new head coach Robert Saleh they hope to finally make some noise.

As for the Patriots, the six-time Super Bowl champions have fallen off the cliff after two decades of domination.

They let Tom Brady go a year ago this month and saw their former quarterback win the Lombardi Trophy with a new team, as they missed out on the playoffs.

Needless to say, this did not suit the New England masses.

With the salary cap reduced from $ 198 million to $ 182.5 million, there are going to be challenges for all the teams that fill out their rosters.

So on the eve of free agency, with that as a backdrop, here’s a look at the Patriots and their AFC counterparts, where they are at, what ceiling space they need to work with (via Spotrac) and what they’re trying to accomplish this offseason.

Patriots

2020 review: 7-9

Projected plug space: $ 61.2 million (includes Cam Newton and Justin Bethel, but not Trent Brown)

Potential AF losses: C David Andrews, OL Joe Thuney, RB James White, RB Rex Burkhead, DL Lawrence Guy, DL Adam Butler, DE Deatrich Wise, K Nick Folk

Victims of the cap: Nothing

Main needs: Quarterback, wide receiver, tight end, defensive line, linebacker

Outlook: After not making the playoffs for the first time in 13 years, there’s a bit of panic at Patriotland, especially not having a quarterback.

Well, they actually do. They brought Cam Newton back for another tour. But it might not be the only quarterback shoe to drop.

Newton’s deal is loaded with incentives, which perhaps allows another quarterback to be added either in free agency, in the draft, or if something unexpected happens, like Jimmy Garoppolo becoming available. .

Historically, not all of the other teams that have gone from legendary quarterbacks have remedied the situation with many successors in a short time. Miami after Dan Marino and Denver after John Elway are two examples of organizations looking for another franchise quarterback for a long time.

Needless to say, the Patriots don’t want to join this club.

Although Newton didn’t get the job done the first year after Tom Brady, he does get a second chance. So, in full free agency, the Patriots go with Newton, the sequel.

Maybe Bill Belichick still believes he can win with anyone behind the center. The way he proceeds beyond re-signing Newton should provide a better guide to his vision for the quarterback position.

As it stands, it’s odd that the Patriots are looking at two teams in the division. It would be a disaster if they didn’t improve, or fell even deeper into the abyss.

Former Patriot Damien Woody put it into perspective: “If the Patriots were in the basement of the AFC East, the whole New England region would implode.

All eyes will therefore be on Belichick. He has the third most money to spend in the NFL and desperate needs on both sides of the ball.

He should also keep in mind that other teams are hooking up some of his internal free agents. The Dolphins appear to be targeting Guy and Butler, given Brian Flores’ connection, and also Andrews, if reports are to be believed.

There could also be a move involving Stephon Gilmore, who is in the final year of his contract. It’s possible the Pats could trade the 2019 Defensive Player of the Year for future picks, or perhaps use it in a deal to acquire another asset.

Along with Newton, the Patriots made a trade with the Raiders to bring back towering lineman Trent Brown, and also re-signed special teams ace Justin Bethel.

The first cards were therefore played in New England. Much more to come.

Invoices

2020 review: 13-3

Projected plug space: $ 8.4 million

Potential AF losses: EDGE Trent Murphy, CB Josh Norman, G Joe Feliciano, G Brian Winters, QB Matt Barkley

Victims of the cap: WR John Brown, DL Quinton Jefferson

Main needs: Defensive line, cornerback, tight end, offensive line

Outlook: While they want to maintain their grip at the top of the division, they are looking more at what they can do, how they can improve to beat Kansas City, which dominated them in the AFC championship game. Their mission has therefore changed. They’re building to win outside the division, with a focus on passing the Chiefs in the playoffs.

But maintaining their grip on the division won’t be easy. The Dolphins have them on their radar, while the Patriots believe they are determined to recover what was lost.

“Everyone’s chasing the Bills,” said Woody. “We will see what they will be like when they play the part of the hunted. ”

On Thursday, they re-signed linebacker Matt Milano to a 4-year, $ 44 million contract, preventing him from reaching the open market. On Friday, they signed tackle Darryl Williams for a three-year extension. They have therefore already locked up some of their internal free agents. Milano is one of the best cover linebackers in the league. Both parties were happy that it worked. Ditto for Williams, who is the protector of Josh Allen’s blind side.

Like the Patriots, the Bills also had problems stopping the run, even with the highest-paid defensive line in the NFL.

The retired Lotulelei star is back. So that should help the run defense unless there are other additions. The fact that they were part of JJ Watt’s draw suggests they’ll want to land a passing rusher as well.

Add a top corner to play against Tre’Davious White, assuming Norman signs elsewhere, and the Bills have their work cut out for not only keeping their position, but leveling up.

dolphins

2020 review: 10-6

Projected plug space: $ 27.15 million

Potential AF losses: QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, C Ted Karras, RB Matt Breida, LB Kamu Grugier-Hill, LB Elandon Roberts, S Kavon Frazier, P Matt Haack

Victims of the cap: LB Kyle Van Noy

Main needs: Running back, wide receiver, center, safety, linebacker, backup QB

Outlook: Are they continuing to build around Tua Tagovailoa, or are they moving on?

With Fitzpatrick also a free agent, there will be movement in the quarterback position.

Some find it hard to believe the Ends will drop out of Tua after just one season. With Deshaun Watson and Russell Wilson able to be traded, however, all bets are off.

The Dolphins sit third in the standings, behind the Jaguars and Jets. They have the ammunition to be on Watson, if the Texans ultimately decide to trade their disgruntled star. Same as Wilson.

If none of these materialize, Tua will likely remain the best gun. If Fitzpatrick signs elsewhere in free agency, the Ends will need another veteran replacement. That’s the end line at the quarterback.

“I think they have a chance to add dynamite weapons for Tua,” said Woody. “I think Tua will be in a good position to take a step forward next year.”

Brian Flores is certainly not kidding if a player or coach is out of shape. He released Van Noy after just a year, believing he was not worth the $ 12.5 million he was owed this season.

Most of the offseason for the Ends will be attacking and building this unit for Tua, or whoever it is. It wouldn’t be surprising if they add a wide receiver and come back to the mix.

For what it’s worth, Flores backed continuing with Tua at a press briefing on Thursday, saying he was “delighted to be working with Tua” and had “confidence in him”.

With Flores, however, it could also mean a goodbye kiss.

Jets

2020 review: 2-14

Projected plug space: $ 67.2 M

Potential AF losses: QB Joe Flacco, RB Frank Gore, WR Breshad Perriman, S Bradley McDougald, CB Brian Poole, EDGE Jordan Jenkins

Victims of the cap: DL Henry Anderson

Main needs: Pass rusher, cornerback, receiver, inside offensive line, running back

Outlook: Finally, the Jets left head coach Adam Gase, replacing him with 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, who has a very good reputation in the league.

They’re armed with a ton of ceiling space, a ton of choice, including the # 2 seat behind Jacksonville, and nowhere to go except up high.

Like Miami, they need to figure out if they keep Sam Darnold, or if they’re in the Watson / Wilson draw, or maybe, take one of the better quarterbacks (Zach Wilson?) With the No. 2 pick. .

“I think they’re going to be the most intriguing team this offseason. And they’ve got the goose that lays the golden eggs, ”said Woody. “This # 2 pick is so valuable whether you keep it or trade it for a ton of extra assets.”

Speaking with reporters in New York, the needs are “everywhere”, and the wonder is how aggressive they are and how much they are going to spend on free agency. Managing Director Joe Douglas tends to be conservative, but he has the money to splurge and acquire significant assets.

Whether the quarterback is Darnold or someone else, the Jets always have to provide an arsenal. Right now the closet is pretty bare. They can certainly afford Kenny Golladay or JuJu Smith-Schuster. It wouldn’t be surprising if one of the high-priced wide-outs landed in New York City.

On the other hand, they have so many holes that they might have to split that money.

It’s a pretty safe bet that Saleh will want to bring some 49ers on board. Cornerback Richard Sherman is a free agent and a big fan of Saleh. Other Niners who could land with the Jets include corner K’Waun Williams and fullback Kyle Juszczyk.

The Jets also placed the franchise tag on Pro Bowl safety Marcus Maye to keep him in the fold for at least another season.

Above all, Gang Green is able to set off all kinds of fireworks with all of their draft assets, not to mention pick # 2.

Steelers 3 most important positional needs as free agency continues https://knoxdemocrats.org/steelers-3-most-important-positional-needs-as-free-agency-continues/ https://knoxdemocrats.org/steelers-3-most-important-positional-needs-as-free-agency-continues/#respond Wed, 24 Mar 2021 07:28:12 +0000 https://knoxdemocrats.org/steelers-3-most-important-positional-needs-as-free-agency-continues/

The Pittsburgh Steelers have many needs to meet before their offseason ends and the season begins.

It will be difficult for the Steelers to meet their free agency needs with the limited amount of ceiling space. They could do more ceiling maneuvers and sign other free agents, but it’s more likely that they’ll go through the draft. It doesn’t matter if they sign free agents or pick their next players to those positions in April, they’ll need to fill those needs before the season begins.

These three are the most important to complete before you can comfortably advance without hesitation to the positions on this list. There have been numerous cap losses over the past two weeks as the list changes from previous years. It could be a blessing in disguise or a disaster depending on what the team can accomplish with their replacements.

Cornerback needs a replacement

Mike Hilton left via free agency as he signed a nice contract with the Cincinnati Bengals. Cam Sutton a resigned with the squad, which is great, but Steven Nelson demanded a trade from Steel City. He wants to cash now after two great seasons with the Steelers. This was very shocking news as it was rumored that he could possibly get a team extension this offseason, but it looks like these negotiations have turned south and now he wants out.

If he is traded, there will be a major need for the cornerback. Sutton is there, but the team will have to fill the hole left at the nickel or the opposite corner of Joe Haden. Free agency could still be an option as there are still decent options out there, but it should be cheap. The other option would be to address this issue during the draft.

Hundreds of people volunteer to escort elderly Asian Americans to keep them safe https://knoxdemocrats.org/hundreds-of-people-volunteer-to-escort-elderly-asian-americans-to-keep-them-safe/ https://knoxdemocrats.org/hundreds-of-people-volunteer-to-escort-elderly-asian-americans-to-keep-them-safe/#respond Wed, 24 Mar 2021 07:28:11 +0000 https://knoxdemocrats.org/hundreds-of-people-volunteer-to-escort-elderly-asian-americans-to-keep-them-safe/

Jacob Azevedo’s stomach turned as he watched a disturbing video of an 84-year-old American Thai man being fatally pushed to the ground on a sidewalk in San Francisco.

It was the second video of an unprovoked attack on an elderly Asian American that Oakland resident Azevedo had seen on social media outside the Bay Area in less than an hour, he told CNN.

Since the world learned of the novel coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, China, harassment and violence targeting the Asian American and Pacific Islander community has increased rapidly in the United States.

More than 2,808 anti-Asian hate stories from 47 states and the District of Columbia were reported between March 19 and December 31, 2020, with 7.3% of those incidents involving Asian Americans over 60 years, according to a report by Stop AAPI Hate, a coalition documenting anti-Asian hatred and discrimination amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

A recent surge in attacks on older Asian Americans in the Bay Area has heightened concerns among activists and community leaders.

Exhausted from the violence, Azevedo offered on social media to walk with anyone in Oakland Chinatown to help them feel safe.

“I didn’t intend to be some sort of vigilante,” Azevedo, 26, told CNN. “I just wanted to give people some kind of comfort.”

His idea quickly resonated throughout the community and within days nearly 300 volunteers joined him to protect the community in a project now called Compassion in Oakland.

Azevedo, who is of Hispanic descent, believes now is the time for all minority groups to show solidarity with the Asian-American community. He said people of all racial backgrounds and ages have contacted him sharing the same desire to help support the community.

“It’s important because this community just needs healing,” Azevedo said. “There is a lot of racial tension because of the rhetoric of the previous president, but in general our communities are in need of healing. This is a problem that has been going on for some time.”

Stop APPI Hate co-founder Cynthia Choi told CNN that crime and violence are not new to the Asian community.

“It’s a problem and an issue that doesn’t get a lot of attention, especially in low-income communities,” Choi said. “And of course the pandemic, I think, has exacerbated conditions and exposed racial disparities. “

Choi said that in times of crisis, when vulnerable people are targeted, it is heartwarming to see community members come out and take action.

“In Oakland, they’re planning this action and it’s really less about controlling than supporting the community and showing off,” she said. “It’s showing our elders who are scared, scared of leaving their homes that we are here, we want to support you, we have you right now.”

Azevedo hopes the organization can work with law enforcement in the future to protect the community.

“We must all unite if we hope to make this community a safer community for years to come,” Azevedo said.

The group has planned a smooth launch of the project on Saturday with a few groups of volunteers in the streets. They hope to continue to raise awareness in the community about this problem.

New radars in LeClaire, the city hopes to reduce accidents https://knoxdemocrats.org/new-radars-in-leclaire-the-city-hopes-to-reduce-accidents/ https://knoxdemocrats.org/new-radars-in-leclaire-the-city-hopes-to-reduce-accidents/#respond Wed, 24 Mar 2021 07:28:11 +0000 https://knoxdemocrats.org/new-radars-in-leclaire-the-city-hopes-to-reduce-accidents/

Two new cameras on Interstate 80 and Highway 67 will activate on January 5, along with a mobile unit that the city will place at random.

LE CLAIRE, Iowa – New traffic cameras around LeClaire – set to detect speeding tickets – will be activated on Tuesday, January 5.

One is posted on Interstate 80, just before the bridge that crosses the river and enters Illinois. The other is on Hwy 67, in the 2300 block of South Cody Road, directly across from Green Gables Marina. They will take the speeders in both directions of traffic.

The LeClaire Police Department said in a press release that they also have a mobile unit that they will place in random hot spots around the city, as needed.

The three Automated Traffic Enforcement (ATE) units come from the company Sensys Gatso Group.

For now, all cars flashed by cameras will only receive warnings. From Friday March 5, these will become official quotes.

According to LeClaire Police Chief Shane Themas, the top priority for the new cameras is to create a safer driving experience in and around town. In the press release he wrote:

“While we know that the use of ATE is not often adopted by the public, we hope our residents and visitors understand that their safety is our top priority. Over the past 10 years, there has been a total of 334 traffic accidents on I-80 and HWY 67, just within our corporate city limits. These included a total of 552 vehicles, 3 fatalities and over 115 injuries. Unfortunately, a single accident, injury or loss of life is too many, so if this program can cut those numbers in half, or even save a life, we think it’s worth it. ”

Some residents, like Dennis Speth, believe the revenue generated from the new cameras will benefit the city.

“The real intention, I believe, is to slow people down. Because that starts a long period of activity. People coming in from the freeway aren’t looking. Coming in from the side of the canal,” Speth said. “I think if people just watch their speedometers and take their foot off the accelerator, you’ll be fine.”

Pete McBurney lives across the river from the Illinois side and says he uses the I-80 bridge every day. Even though he says he hasn’t seen too many crashes, he believes the new speed brakes will be good for the city in the long run.

“I saw other places where they put them and people paid more attention to the speed limit, so it slowed the traffic down a bit. I saw other places where [there’s] 40 miles per hour speed limit – people do 60. So I hope that will do some good, ”he said.

RELATED: K9 Officer Killed in Crash with Suspected Drunk Driver, Boone County Sheriff’s Department Says.

McBurney added that he worries the good the cameras can do will be overshadowed if overused. But until that happens and more cameras are mounted, he’s confident the cameras won’t keep tourists away from LeClaire.

However, not everyone agrees with him. Mike Trujillo has lived in LeClaire since 1960. He called the cameras “speed traps” and said he has never seen them in town before and doesn’t want them anymore.

“I don’t know why we have them now,” he said. “We didn’t have a lot of problems. You could catch a speeder but [the police] are still sitting there anyway, so why waste our money? ”

He’s also worried that the addition of cameras might make people want to go through LeClaire – which would be a big blow to downtown businesses that rely heavily on tourism.

“We’re busy on the weekends here with all the business that we have here, and I think it’s going to hurt,” Trujillo said. “It’s a waste of money. I think they should have used the money for something else.”

Tennessee mom in Cam Newton: this is what my 9 year old saw https://knoxdemocrats.org/tennessee-mom-in-cam-newton-this-is-what-my-9-year-old-saw/ https://knoxdemocrats.org/tennessee-mom-in-cam-newton-this-is-what-my-9-year-old-saw/#respond Wed, 24 Mar 2021 07:28:11 +0000 https://knoxdemocrats.org/tennessee-mom-in-cam-newton-this-is-what-my-9-year-old-saw/

Nashville Tennesee Titans fan Rosemary Plorin attended Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers with her fourth-year daughter. On Monday, she sent us this note she wrote to Panthers quarterback Cam Newton:

Dear Mr. Newton,

Congratulations on your victory in Nashville today. Our team played well, but yours played better. Bravo to the organization of the Panthers.

This game turned out to be my nine year old daughter’s first live experience in the NFL. She was surprised to see so many Panthers fans sitting in our section of the stadium; that doesn’t happen a lot at fourth-grade football games. And she was excited that we were close to the end zone, so we would be close to ‘the action’, especially in the second half.

Because of where we sat, we got a close-up view of your driving in the fourth quarter. The chest swells. Pelvic thrusts. The arrogant displays and taunts “in front” of players and fans of the Titans. We have seen it all.

I refuse to believe that you don’t realize that you are a role model. You get paid millions of dollars every week to play hard and be a leader. In the off season, you are supposed to make appearances, support charities, and inspire young children to play your sport and all sports. With everything the NFL has been through in the past few years, I have no doubt that they have indicated that you are, by virtue of your position and your choice of career, a role model.

And because you are a role model, your behavior stands out as behavior in the stands. Some of the Panthers fans in our section started taunting the hometown fans. You’ve been booed by many Titans fans, with a few offering informative, but not necessarily family-friendly, suggestions on how you might change your behavior.

My daughter immediately sensed the change and started asking questions. Won’t he be in trouble for doing this? Is he trying to drive people crazy? Do you think he knows he looks like a spoiled child?

I didn’t have good answers for her, and honestly, in an effort to minimize your negative impact and what otherwise was a really fun day, I turned her attention back to the cheerleaders and the mascot.

I could tell she was still thinking about it as we boarded a shuttle bus back to our car. “I guess he doesn’t have kids or mom at home to watch the game,” she added.

I don’t know about your family life Mr. Newton, but I think I’m safe to say that thousands of kids are watching you every week. You have amazing talent and an amazing platform to be a role model for them. Unfortunately, what you have molded for them today is selfishness, arrogance and lack of sportsmanship.

Have your coaches and mentors modeled for you, Mr. Newton?

Update: Observer reader and Panthers fan respond.

Cam Newton responds to Panthers saying they accepted his trade request https://knoxdemocrats.org/cam-newton-responds-to-panthers-saying-they-accepted-his-trade-request/ https://knoxdemocrats.org/cam-newton-responds-to-panthers-saying-they-accepted-his-trade-request/#respond Wed, 24 Mar 2021 07:28:11 +0000 https://knoxdemocrats.org/cam-newton-responds-to-panthers-saying-they-accepted-his-trade-request/

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Carolina Panthers and Cam Newton have reached an agreement that the two sides will work together to find a new team for the 2015 NFL MVP.

In the Panthers Instagram comments Publish Announcing that the team had given him “permission to seek a trade,” Newton issued a response, saying the organization had forced him into this situation.

“Stop with the pun,” he wrote. “I never asked for it. There’s no dodging this one; I love the Panthers to the death and I will always love you guys. Please don’t try to play. with me, or don’t manipulate the narrative and act the way I wanted; you forced me to this. “

Former Panthers tight end Greg Olsen also responded to the same Instagram post, writing: “Sounds familiar.”

Olsen suggests that, like Newton, he was forced to leave. The Panthers finally released him in February.

Whichever side is at fault, the writing has been on the wall for quite some time. Last January, Newton underwent right shoulder surgery, a red flag for a quarterback throwing with that same arm.

Newton was able to return in Week 1 of the 2019 campaign, but his season was cut short when he suffered a Lisfranc fracture that sidelined him in Week 3. Cam was placed on the injured list two months later when the Panthers claimed the injury wasn’t healing as quickly as expected.

With former Panthers head coach Ron Rivera in Washington, and Matt Rhule now at the helm, Carolina appears to be looking for a flagman to match their new coach’s offense. So, even before the dust on Newton’s news set in, the Panthers were rushing to acquire their new quarterback, Teddy Bridgewater, according to Ian Rapoport.

This message will be updated.

No visitors allowed in eastern Tennessee hospitals to stop COVID-19 https://knoxdemocrats.org/no-visitors-allowed-in-eastern-tennessee-hospitals-to-stop-covid-19/ https://knoxdemocrats.org/no-visitors-allowed-in-eastern-tennessee-hospitals-to-stop-covid-19/#respond Wed, 24 Mar 2021 07:28:11 +0000 https://knoxdemocrats.org/no-visitors-allowed-in-eastern-tennessee-hospitals-to-stop-covid-19/

Hospitals in eastern Tennessee are taking additional steps to protect patients and ensure the coronavirus does not spread inside their facilities.

As the coronavirus spreads in eastern Tennessee, several hospitals are changing their policies to protect patients and prevent the virus from contaminating the facility.

Hundreds of cases have been reported across Tennessee, and that number is expected to increase as more testing resources become available. The more people tested, the more the health system will be able to detect and report the number of cases to the Ministry of Health.

Several of the new hospital policies prohibit people from visiting patients, with exceptions for special cases. Since hospital patients may have weakened immune systems, they are at risk of catching COVID-19.

Governor Bill Lee also signed an executive order banning hospitals from performing elective surgeries, in order to free up the resources needed to fight the spread of the coronavirus.

Below are a few hospitals that have changed their policies due to the spread of the coronavirus.

Visitors are no longer admitted to the hospital until further notice.

The following special considerations will be taken into account:

  • Visiting a loved one for end-of-life care
  • A visitor essential to the care of the patient (unique communication needs, language barriers)
  • Patients coming for surgery or tests may be accompanied by a caregiver
  • Women giving birth may have a partner, doula, or caregiver (North Knoxville Medical Center and Newport Medical Center)

Hospital officials have said it will stop performing elective surgeries and work to reschedule them as soon as they can resume their performance.

Officials said the necessary procedures would continue as needed. These include any procedure that preserves life, prevents damage, or is necessary to treat a patient’s condition or illness.

  • Patients who come for surgery or tests may be accompanied by a caregiver.
  • Women who give birth may have a support person (partner, doula or caregiver) for the duration of their stay.
  • Babies in the NICU may have a visiting parent.

They also said authorized visitors will only be able to enter through four entrances.

  • Boling Pavilion (located next to the circle of flags) – Open 24/7
  • Hospital emergency department corridor – Open 24/7
  • Main Heart Hospital (located next to Fountain Circle) – Open Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Corridor at the intersection of Building C of the Medical Office and Medical Office Buildings A and F – Open Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

All visitors must be at least 16 years old. Anyone authorized to visit a patient will be asked about their relationship with them, as well as their travel history and symptoms they may have from the coronavirus.
