Flashback: Harris protested at the southern border in 2018, but hasn’t surrendered since taking on the migrant role

Vice President Kamala Harris has faced criticism from Republicans and former Trump officials for failing to visit the border in her leading role in handling the migrant crisis – albeit she went there in 2018 to protest the policies of the Trump era.

Harris was appointed in March by President Biden to conduct diplomatic talks with Mexican and Northern Triangles leaders to resolve the migratory surge that has led to an overwhelming southern border crisis.

KAMALA HARRIS LEFT 59 DAYS WITHOUT AN INFO CONFERENCE SINCE BEING TAPPED FOR THE ROLE OF BORDER CRISIS

While the White House has said that Harris’s role is not the border per se, but rather focuses on addressing the “root causes” of the crisis, critics have pushed back, saying that in order to make this awareness, it is first necessary to see what is happening at the border.

“I would say that the vice president, if she really tackles this problem, has to do both, has to get to the border, has to understand the conditions that are being lived, has to understand and talk to the men and women of the Border Patrol, she needs to hear firsthand what they are going through because everything is interrelated, ”former acting DHS secretary Chad Wolf said last month.

But, even though Harris is planning trips to Guatemala and Mexico next month, there is no sign of a border visit anytime soon.

This is in contrast to in 2018, when as a California senator, she visited San Diego’s border with Mexico, claiming that the Trump administration’s zero tolerance policy – which led to the separation of adults and of children – was a “violation of human rights”.

“I have spoken with the mothers who are there, and my heart is broken,” she told protesters outside the Otay Mesa detention center, according to the report. San Diego Union Tribune. “These mothers over there think they are alone. We have to remind them and everyone else that they are not alone and that we are all by their side.”

It was greeted by cheers from the demonstrators, who held placards with slogans, including “Abolish ICE”.

She also condemned the practice of keeping migrants in ICE detention centers – which still happens under the Biden administration.

“I am a career prosecutor”, she said. “I have visited many prisons and prisons. It is a prison. You walk in the hallways and the doors close and there are bars on the windows.”

Harris has gone over 50 days without visiting the border or even holding a press conference since being selected for the role of President Biden – for which Republicans have repeatedly criticized her.

Earlier this week, Representative Ashley Hinson, R-Iowa, introduced a bill that would ban taxpayer funding for Harris’s trip elsewhere until she made it to the border.

“It puts yarn stores and bakeries before the border,” Hinson told Fox News in an interview this week. “She’s in touch with the Mexican president, but I think it sends the wrong message to the men and women who put their lives on the line every day, not to mention the men, women and families who live in these communities along. of the border. and the communities of Iowa – every state is a border state. “
