Police see increase in “cam girl” scams; FBI says outbreak is due to COVID-19

FBI reports sextortion is currently on the rise due to COVID-19 and the increase in the time people spend online. Victims of recent sextortion reports come from all walks of life and demographic groups, police say of Asheville. Victims can be targeted through all internet devices. The FBI recommends reporting this activity to the Internet Crime Complaint Center or a local FBI office. FBI agents also recommend being vigilant for any suspicious activity on credit card or bank statements.
