GOP leaders condemn 2 House Republicans for associating with white nationalist event

On Monday evening, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy spoke publicly on the issue for the first time.

“Last week, I was just in Israel. … And then when I come back, I see two colleagues, who went and participated with a group that has a leader who often gives you anti-Semitic views, led a singing for (Russian President Vladimir) Putin. To me, that was appalling and wrong,” McCarthy told CNN and another reporter outside his office on Monday. “There is no place in our party for all this.”

Greene, a Republican from Georgia, spoke Friday at the America First political action conference in Orlando, Florida, an event founded by far-right activist Nick Fuentes as an alternative to the annual action conference conservative policy. Gosar appeared at America’s first political action conference via pre-recorded video, HuffPost reported. Gosar also attended the same conference last year.

McCarthy also said he plans to have a discussion with Greene and Gosar about this in the coming days; so far, he has only exchanged text messages with Greene.

“The party should not be associated, at any time, anywhere, with an anti-Semitic body,” McCarthy continued. “She personally went to answer that, saying she didn’t know. But I think with that intro, you should have walked off stage.”

“This is unacceptable,” he added.

McCarthy’s sentencing follows Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s release of a written statement calling out Greene and Gosar, saying, “There is no place in the Republican Party for white supremacists. or anti-Semitism”.

Other prominent Republicans also spoke out against Greene and Gosar on Monday.

Senate GOP Whip John Thune of South Dakota called lawmakers at that conference “unacceptable.”

Rep. Dan Crenshaw — a Republican from Texas who has publicly criticized the House Freedom Caucus, of which Greene and Gosar are members — also called them out for attending the event and said he didn’t know the organizer’s opinion.

“I hate Nick Fuentes. Everyone should know they’re supposed to hate Nick Fuentes. He’s one of the worst human beings I’ve ever met,” Crenshaw told CNN. “And there’s no way (Greene) didn’t understand that before he went to the conference.”

Greene defended her recent appearance in a lengthy statement on Sunday, calling the blowback ‘false divisions and spurious allegations’ and proclaiming that she will not ‘cancel’ other conservatives even if she finds their statements ‘tasteless, misguided or even sometimes repugnant”. .”

“The Republican Party self-righteous might attack me because I am willing to break down barriers and speak to a lost generation of young people who desperately need love and leadership,” she said. “But I won’t give up on these young men and women, because I think we have to do better with them.”

Gosar did not respond to CNN’s request for comment on Sunday.
