- House Republicans attacked a Jan. 6 committee witness in real time Thursday.
- But the witness, Sarah Matthews, still works for Republicans in Congress.
- The GOP Twitter account later deleted the attack on Matthews, who called her a “liar.”
The official House Republican Twitter account on Thursday attacked a staffer who currently works for a House Republican while testifying before the House committee on January 6. The tweet was later deleted.
“Just another liar and pawn in the Pelosi witch hunt,” the @HouseGOP account wrote in a now-deleted tweet.
The employee in question, Sarah Matthews, previously worked as a communications assistant at the Trump White House. She is now communications director for Republicans on the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis.
The tweet cited a previous message Matthews had posted on his own account that thanked former President Donald Trump and former Vice President Mike Pence “for your service to the American people” and for the opportunity to work alongside them. She posted the tweet on January 20, 2021.
The Twitter account belongs to the House Republican Conference, which is run by the office of Representative Elise Stefanik, according to Policy.
Stefanik, a Republican from New York, became the No. 3 Republican in the House after the GOP ousted Representative Liz Cheney from her perch for her refusal to stop criticizing Trump for his role in inciting the insurrection.
A House GOP spokesperson said the tweet was “sent to staff level.”
“The tweet was sent at the staff level and was not authorized or the position of the conference and has therefore been removed,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
Cheney, of course, is now the top Republican on the House Jan. 6 committee.
Matthews testified Thursday before the Jan. 6 committee that she clashed with other Trump staffers over Trump’s need to condemn the violent attack on the Capitol.
