One of the solutions envisaged is the exchange of prisoners. The Joe Biden administration attempted a swap deal to bring Griner and former Marine Paul Whelan back to the United States of America. However, the negotiations were far from straightforward.

While some praise the government’s efforts to bring Griner back, some disagree. Mickey Bergman, vice president and executive director of the Richardson Center for Global Engagement commented on the situation and called it “intellectually lazy and morally bankrupt.

This comes in response to an official who spoke “of the need to bring [Griner and Whelan] residence.”Interestingly, Bergman was one of the officials who traveled to Moscow to meet with officials about two former Marines. He played a huge role in bringing Trevor Reed back from Russia.

In the event officials are able to proceed with the prisoner swap, they should hand over notorious arms dealer Viktor Bout to Russia. According to reports, Bout will be used to bring Whelan and Griner back to the United States.

The POTUS openly supported Brittney Griner

Since her arrest and conviction in Russia, Brittney Griner has received both support and hatred from around the world. The POTUS Joe Biden has been quite supportive of the Phoenix Mercury star.
