US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden traveled to Windsor Castle for tea with the Queen on Sunday afternoon.
The couple landed on the grounds of the monarch’s residence in Berkshire on Marine One just before 5 p.m., minutes ahead of schedule.
They were greeted by the Queen, who wore a bright pink floral outfit, in the castle quadrangle, before entering the castle through the Sovereign’s Entrance at 5:18 pm.
A guard of honor formed from the Queen’s Company First Battalion Grenadier Guards gave a royal salute and the United States national anthem was played.
Mr Biden then accompanied the Officer Commanding the Honor Guard, Major James Taylor, and Major General Christopher Ghika to inspect the Honor Guard, before returning to the dais to watch the military parade with the Queen .
The role of escorting a visiting Head of State to inspect troops is a job the Duke of Edinburgh held, prior to his retirement in 2017. Prince Philip died in April at the age of 99 .
As the US President walked alongside the Queen, the monarch said: “You have finished your talks.” To which he replied, “Yes, we did. “
The couple left Windsor Castle at 6:03 p.m., according to the palace.
Mr Biden later told reporters that the Queen “reminded me of my mother.” He said: “I don’t think she would be insulted, but she reminded me of my mother, her look and her generosity.”
He added that he was questioned about Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin when they met.
“She wanted to know who were the two leaders that I – the one I’m about to meet, Mr. Putin, and she wanted to know about Xi Jinping,” he said.
The Bidens had previously met the Queen when she hosted a reception for G7 leaders on Friday night in Cornwall.
Upon arriving in Britain, Dr Biden said: “Joe and I are both looking forward to meeting the Queen. It is an exciting part of the visit for us.
The meeting marks the end of the president’s British leg of his first international trip since entering the White House in January.
It also happened the day after the Queen celebrated her official birthday and received her official birthday gift from the country’s armed forces – a scaled-down Trooping the Color parade – held at the castle.
After leaving Windsor, Biden will travel to the NATO summit in Brussels on Monday, a US-EU summit on Tuesday, and a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Geneva the next day.
