Vice President Kamala Harris and three Indian members of Congress paid tribute to General Colin Powell, who died Monday morning of complications from Covid-19.
Harris, the first African-American and Indian-American vice president, tweeted from her official handle:

“Secretary Colin Powell was an incredible American. An independent thinker and barrier breaker, he has dedicated his life to defending our nation and has always shown the world the best of who we are.

Powell, a four-star general, served as Secretary of State during President George W. Bush’s first term. He was the first African American to become the country’s top diplomat.

Among the many other firsts he achieved during his illustrious career, he was the first black national security adviser under President Ronald Reagan. He was also the youngest and the first African-American chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff when President George HW Bush appointed him to these posts.

US Indian Members of Congress, Representatives Ami Bera, D-CA, joined Harris in offering condolences on the deaths of the decorated soldiers; Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-IL; and Representative Ro Khanna, D-CA.

“Today we mourn the loss of an American hero as we remember a life of public service,” Krishnamoorthi tweeted.

“Secretary Colin Powell was a pioneer and a committed public servant who dedicated his life to our nation. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time, ”tweeted Bera, the oldest American Indian in the United States House of Representatives.

His Californian Democratic colleague Khanna also paid tribute to Powell: “Colin Powell led our army to victory during the desert storm, was the first African-American secretary of state, crossed party lines and inspired millions of young people across our country keep their promise. “
