Kamala Harris’ team reportedly worried about ‘messy’ 2024 fight with Pete Buttigieg

If President Joe Biden does not stand for re-election in 2024 (he will be 81 in November 2023), Vice President Kamala Harris is generally expected to be the Democratic Party candidate.

However, it looks like Harris’ relatives are gearing up for a more difficult presidential primary than expected.

Business Insider reported The Harris team expects a “difficult and messy” primary on Friday in which they would likely face Transport Secretary Pete Buttigieg, whose donors are would have urged him run for president again if Biden steps down.

A former Harris staff member told the vice president’s US Business Insider, “I don’t think she’s got a grip on the party” and “I don’t think it’s like Al Gore for Bill Clinton.”

Harris was the subject of repeated and unflattering leaks during the first year of the Biden presidency. Administration officials have complained about a wide range of missteps reported by Harris, including his public comments on the border with an allegedly toxic workplace in his office.

Harris and Buttigieg have previously been reported to have a good relationship, with respective spouses – Doug Emhoff and Chasten Buttigieg – become close friends. Buttigieg too helped Harris prepare for the debate during the 2020 presidential campaign, playing the role of Mike Pence during vice presidential debates practice.

Buttigieg outlasted Harris in the 2020 Democratic presidential primaries, with the latter dropping out before the contests even started. Buttigieg exceeded expectations and eventually dropped out after the South Carolina primary.
