Michigan Republicans Prepare for 2022 Mackinac Island Election

MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. (WOOD) – Michigan Republicans have gathered on Mackinac Island for a conference they hold every two years in preparation for the next election.

The conference still features national speakers – some who may be considering higher positions – and plenty of conversations about how to win, in this case in 2022.

Some of these nationally recognized speakers include Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Senator Lindsey Graham, RS.C.

One of the crowd favorites was South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem. She spoke to a packed house in the Grand Hotel theater and then spoke to News 8 political reporter Rick Albin about unifying the party until 2022.

“I would just say we need to come together with our basic truths about respecting the constitution and protecting the best in America and be optimistic, be happy. What we believe in really creates opportunities, ”said Noem.

Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel said the idea of meeting ahead of an election that will see all 435 U.S. House seats as well as a number of U.S. Senate and Governor races – United is essential for a party that wants to regain some of what they have lost over the past two rounds.

“They are mad at each other,” McDaniel said. “There are some who just don’t like themselves, but they don’t like Democrats more. So we will go through our primaries and get over our problems in our family and then focus on winning back the House and the Senate. “

The idea that a party, in this case the Republican Party, must regroup after some tough electoral losses is not unique according to Representative Bill Huizenga, R-Zeeland. He says listening is a good start.

“Here’s what we really need to do: listen to each other, we need to talk to each other,” Huizenga said. “We really have to try to figure out what is motivating and where these other people are coming from and be heard, don’t we too.”

As this year’s conference wraps up, Republicans hope they can find a united front as they head into a crucial electoral cycle further complicated by the fact that all districts for members of Congress, the House of State and Senate will be redesigned and at this time, none of those currently serving can be sure what this new district might look like.
