The New England Patriots will not travel outside of the United States for any games in 2020, as the league has announced that all games will be domestic this season amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The New England Patriots will stay in the United States for the entire 2020 season.
In fact, none of the 32 NFL teams will travel overseas this year, as the league announced Monday all games will be national this season amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, with the 2020 schedule soon to be announced, at least tentatively, all games must stay within the borders of the United States. This will ultimately eliminate all potential contests in London, England or Mexico City, Mexico.
Extract from the press release:
The National Football League announced today that it will schedule all games for 2020 in the United States to ensure that the entire season is played in the stadiums of NFL teams under consistent protocols focused on the well-being of the players. , staff and fans.
There was a chance the Patriots had played away this season. Last November, the Miami herald reported that the Miami Dolphins were will play an international match. It was not known if this match would have taken place in London or Mexico City, and neither did the opponent. But given the AFC East rivalry, there was a chance New England could have been selected.
That won’t happen now, according to the report.
The last time New England played an international game was at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico against the Oakland Raiders in 2017. The Pats won that game 33-8. The last time the Patriots played in London was back in 2012 when they strangled the St. Louis Rams 45-7.
The NFL has long tried to expand its influence overseas and internationally, increasing the number of games played in both the UK and Mexico. Discussions about London getting its own pro team have also continued over the years.
Still, concerns about the health of players and fans, at least internationally, have temporarily put an end to these games.
It seems a strong possibility, however, the league is revisiting the idea of reopening its international series in 2021, depending on what happens with the COVID-19 pandemic and how its unknown long-term effects manifest. To date, professional football is the only major American sport not being delayed by the coronavirus, although that could easily change in the weeks and months to come.
For now, the 2020 schedule appears to be moving forward as planned.
