Over the years, BlackWomenViews Founder and political analyst Reecie Colbert has ruffled quite a few feathers with her bold takes on cultural happenings. She appeared on MSNBC’s Cross Connection with Tiffany Cross as well as the Symone Sanders To display. Perhaps she is best known as a regular commentator on Roland Martin Unfiltered, where she speaks with equal parts intelligence and bravado.
His new digital book, “Long and Short Of It Guide To The 2022 Midterms: The Radical Republicans,” is (as Colbert describes it) a “quick and dirty read” that profiles 20 GOP candidates with racist, sexist, and regressive ideologies. Colbert tells The root on how the Republican Party is the most dangerous it has ever been.
“We’re still focused on Democrats and ‘Democrats don’t do this, Democrats don’t do that, Democrats didn’t cancel my student debt.’ We have to recognize the Republicans’ willingness to either impede progress or to implement their agenda and it is a very regressive agenda. These people don’t have a plan to improve society, they only have a plan to deconstruct it. They just want to disenfranchise and marginalize…it’s their only plan.
From Texas Governor Gregg Abbott to U.S. Senate candidates Herschel Walker (Georgia) and JD Vance (Ohio), Colbert explains that hate remains one of the core tenets of the GOP. “JD Vance directs the vilest campaign, hands down…as if he was explicitly appealing to racists. He said, ‘Do you hate Mexicans? Are you racist? As if it were a replica of an advertisement. His campaign is all about white grievances – he’s a supporter of Kyle Rittenhouse.
Colbert also denounced the “insidious and sinister” nature of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (who is behind the “Stop WOKE Act” and the “Don’t Say Gay” bill) as well as the hypocrisy of Herschel walker. “I try to give a lot of grace to black people, especially in the political space. If you’re a Republican, I’ll just leave you alone. I’m not really going to drag you like I would drag a Liz Chaney or a Ron DeSantis.
“But Herschel is remarkably unserious and when he talks it’s just complete gibberish – and he doesn’t care about black people. He said “I apologize to the black community because they don’t have black fathers” and he himself was a absent dad…like, come on. He just performs for a white audience.
Colbert ultimately wants his book to be used as a tool to educate the masses. “I’ve squeezed hours and hours of research into a really digestible book so you can ingest information about these candidates and understand what’s going on in the country. I want people to feel empowered, I want that they feel informed.
She also wants people, especially black people, to recognize their political and social capital. “I just want us to really recognize that the stakes are high. I know they were high before writing this book, but after writing it, I want everyone to see that we have a real shot at changing the course of this country.
