PARIS –U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris landed in Paris on Tuesday at the start of a four-day visit and charm offensive to solidify US relations with France, the United States’ longest-serving ally .

Washington’s relations with Paris hit an all-time low this year after a U.S.-British submarine deal with Australia thwarted a French deal to sell submarines to the Australian Navy.

At the end of last month, President Joe Biden told French President Emmanuel Macron that the United States had been “awkward” in its handling of the US-UK submarine agreement with Australia.

Harris is due to visit the famous Institut Pasteur on Tuesday to meet American and French scientists working on COVID-19 preparedness around the world. Officials said the visit will underline the long-standing scientific exchange between the United States and France, and determination to address global challenges, especially to end the pandemic.

But the institute also has personal symbolism for Harris. Her late mother, who was a scientist, conducted breast cancer research with scientists at the institute in the 1980s.
