350 Democrats from around East Tennessee came together to celebrate Truman Day 2013.
KCDP Truman Day events were a rousing success as all enjoyed the speeches, presentations, great crowd, decorations, and videos. Mayor Madeline Rogero was MC and U. S. Representative Steve Cohen from Memphis the featured speaker. Representatives Joe Armstrong and Gloria Johnson brought messages and, past TNDP Chair, Chip Forrester made introductions of other dignitaries.
“Steve Cohen described events just as they are happening. It was like he was seeing it through our eyes or we’re seeing it through his. He affirmed the seriousness of this effort to halt the budget in hostage. It’s all about politics and nothing about policy,“ said, Doug Veum, former vice Chairman of the Knox County Democratic Party.
Cameron Brooks, Vice chair of the Party, reported there were 350 in attendance this year, 150 more people than last year’s successful event.
A highlight of the event was the presentation of the 2013 Truman Day Champions Award to Harold and Sylvia Woods for recognition of their decades of service in improving the lives of working people in the state of Tennessee. They were most appreciative of the acknowledgement and both addressed the group with thanks.
Chair Linda Haney, chair of the party, thanked all in attendance and particularly acknowledged the hard work of the Truman day committee, who organized the event.

KNOXVILLE DEMOCRATIC PARTY CHAIR LINDA HANEY APPLAUDS PRESIDENT OBAMA’S VISION FOR ECONOMIC SECURITY FOR THE MIDDLE CLASS AHEAD OF TUESDAY’S SPEECH IN CHATTANOOGA
Knoxville, Tenn. — President Obama will lay out his vision for a thriving middle class that rewards hard work and gives everyone a fair shot on Tuesday in Chattanooga. Knox County Democratic Party Chair Linda Haney released the following statement ahead of the President’s speech:
“President Obama has never stopped fighting for middle class families. From saving the auto industry and helping students pay for college to securing tax cuts for 98% of Americans and taking on a broken health care system, the President and Democrats in Congress have worked to improve the lives of hard-working Americans. Although our country is on the right track, there is more work to be done.
“President Obama has laid out a clear vision for what can be done to spur economic growth and build an economy from the middle class out. Rebuilding a failing infrastructure to help businesses, expanding access to affordable health care, educating our children, and securing a retirement for people who have worked hard their whole lives are not partisan ideas or goals, but the bedrock of our American system.
“It’s time for Republicans in Congress, like Congressman Duncan, to stop refighting old battles and putting a victory in the polls ahead of a victory for Tennesseans. It’s time for Republicans to work with President Obama on giving the middle class a better bargain.”

Much thanks and appreciation goes out to the 4th and 9th district Democrats for their road cleaning efforts.
The 4th District had its Adopt – A – Road cleanup of a two mile section of Northshore Dr. on Saturday morning, June 8th, 2013. Cindy Taylor, from the Shopper News, was present to cover the event. During the two and a half hour cleanup we collected 18 bags of trash and other loose scraps (such as old highway signs!) Eric Mcanly took photos to distribute on social media to the “PickinUpTennessee” project sponsored by Scenic Tennessee (#PknUpTn). Several passing motorists voiced their approval of our efforts.
Twice per year the KCDP 9th District “South of the River Democrats” led by Jim Sessions and Debbie Helsley, clean up a well traveled two mile area in South Knoxville. This Adopt A Road project entitles the group to their own permanent identifying road signs on both ends of the project. After the morning of work, the group eats lunch together at a near by restaurant. Several of the KCDP Districts have Adopt A Road projects which provides publicity for Democrats as they show their concern for the community.
